I’d been wanting to bring this concept to life for a while, so when a fresh wall and creative freedom came along, I jumped at the chance to explore it. Sharks have always been a huge influence in my artwork, so after seeing a 30-foot mural by the artist “Shark Toof” at Melbourne Beach, I felt it was time to incorporate one into my murals.

Hammerheads are so incredibly unique, even amongst their own species. Being one of the most interestingly-designed animals on Earth, I had always wanted to incorporate them into a project of mine. Their image is menacing yet slightly vacant in expression with their wide-set eyes. This led me to the title of “head in the clouds.”

To make this mural stand out even more, I explored ways for the mural itself to change over time. As the wall here is set beneath the unforgiving sun of Orlando, Florida, I started experimenting with the idea of using thermochromic paint. The pigment in the paint is heat-sensitive and reacts by changing color as the temperature fluctuates. Every time you see the mural, it will look slightly different as the sun changes its color at different times of day.
