A growing interest for most cities has been the idea of creating a marketplace or a food hall; a collective for local breweries, eateries, bars, restaurants, and other shops. To create a communal space for people to enjoy their cities’ finest offerings takes incredible creativity and hard work. There was clear benefit to such a space in Downtown Orlando, and it finally came to fruition with the creation of Bumby Arcade on Church Street.

The street where the food hall would live has a lot of history and architectural design elements from the past 100 years that I was able to pull from for the direction of this design. I wanted to pay homage to the ornate details used previously in a modern fashion. The area and building itself contained hints of Victorian typefaces and intricate filigree that made it inspiring to just walk along the street.

I knew I wanted to create a logo based on the Victorian typefaces, but I always wanted it to have some historical reference to Church Street and its original branding which dated back to 1880. Below is a mock currency that I dug up during research that sports a heavily detailed type logo. From this, I took the ornate and intricate detail work as well as the pike piercing through the “C”.

Many renditions were drawn, but what resonated through them all was the ornate flowing pattern binding it together, emulating the original victorian metal guard rails found at the building site.

An element of the building itself that was important for me to propose was the gold leaf window sign. It would be a historical nod to the building’s previous tenants that would also add a sense of class and value.

I proposed an entrance mural concept to create a lasting first impression and provide a photo opportunity prior to entering the building.

Working closely with the interior designers, the space began to select its vendors and take shape amongst the historic architecture that had been preserved. Exposed brick, ornate signage, and modern furniture all had their place in the early renderings of the future marketplace.
